Een chordoom is een heel zeldzame, kwaadaardige bottumor. In Nederland krijgen per jaar minder dan 15 mensen deze ziekte. Een chordoom ontstaat uit cellen van de chorda dorsalis. Dit weefsel ontwikkelt zich tijdens de ontwikkeling van het embryo tot de ruggengraat. De botten van de ruggengraat vervangen de chorda dorsalis.
